Walter Lee Bates 77, of Golden City, passed away on April 30, 2026.
Walt was born on October 7, 1948, in Elwood, Indiana, to Walter O. Bates and Bette (Clem) Bates. He spent his life working hard, providing for his family in the trucking industry, a profession he took great pride in through many years on the road.
He was married to the love of his life, Sheri (Geisdorf) Bates, with whom he shared 34 years of happy memories. Walt was known for his big heart. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, even if it was the only one he had. He loved to cook and eat! Walt was very opinionated and didn't fail to let you know what was on his mind. He had a dry humor that took some off guard, especially the kids. He was gruff with them, but he loved them. He was an avid fisherman. Fishing was his favorite thing to do and when he was able you would find him beside the lake or on the lake. He loved his little Hummingbirds and looked forward to welcoming them each spring.
He is survived by his wife, Sheri Bates; son, Bryce Ritter and two grandsons, Jayden and Kolten Ritter of Jackson, MO; his sisters, Babette (Edward) Hosier of Ozark, MO; and Melinda Horton, of Lamar, MO; along with extended family and friends who will cherish his memory.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Bates and Bette (Clem) Bates.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
